Riverdale has a youthful atmosphere with lots of young families and urban professionals. The neighbourhood has a relaxed residential atmosphere within easy reach of Downtown Toronto. There are many great options for shopping, dining, and nightlife within walking distance. Danforth Avenue at the neighbourhood’s edge has some of the best restaurants and music venues in Toronto.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Riverdale’s Broadview Hotel is a boutique hotel with stylish dining spaces housed within a striking Richardsonian Romanesque building constructed in 1891. The Civic at the Broadview Hotel offers elegant fine dining with dishes prepared using fresh local ingredients paired with an impressive wine list. The hotel’s other dining options include the light-filled Broadview Bistro + Bar, the intimate Tower, and The Rooftop, which includes panoramic views of the Toronto skyline. A few blocks further along Broadview Avenue, Lady Marmalade offers inventive breakfast and lunch fare in an art-filled space dating back to 1885.

Riverdale homes are within walking distance of many more shopping and dining destinations. Boutiques along Carlaw Avenue include stylish clothing store KASPACE. Danforth Avenue is a diverse and cosmopolitan commercial stretch with sidewalk cafes, bookstores, international eateries, and live music venues. Danforth Music Hall is one of Toronto’s premier performance spaces, and the Greektown section of Danforth Avenue features many excellent restaurants serving traditional Greek cuisine.

Things to Do

Riverdale has three main parks, all of which feature baseball diamonds, hockey rinks, tennis courts, picnic lawns, and wading pools. The largest is Riverdale Park, which offers a variety of sports facilities and special events such as Movies in the Park during the summer. Riverdale Farm is a 7.5-acre working farm in Riverdale Park’s southwest corner. Visitors to the farm can see its animals and walk through the flower, herb, and vegetable gardens. The farm’s Meeting House hosts special handwork and craft programs throughout the year.

Riverdale is an arts hub, housing many small and large galleries. Some of the most popular include multimedia artist Francisco Castro Lostalo’s Visions Gallery, alternative art exhibition space Spazio dell’Arte, photography-focused IX Gallery, and international contemporary art exhibitions at Emily Harding Gallery.

Taste of the Danforth in early August is a weekend-long celebration of Greek cuisine. As many as 1.6 million attendees head to Danforth Avenue to sample souvlaki, gyros, and other Greek specialties.
